| Dr. Chai-Ho Ahn |
Dr. Ahn graduated from Taegu Teachers¡¯ College and went on to obtain his medical degree from Yonsei University Medical School. He then interned and finished his residency at Masan National Tuberculosis Hospital in Masan, Korea, and survived the Korean War. At that time, the United States was not accepting immigrants; however, due to a change in immigrations laws in 1952 and the need for doctors, Manhattan General Hospital in New York provided him an interview and Dr. Ahn was able to enter the United States. The Chai Ahn family was the second Korean immigrant family to be admitted to the United States under the new law. However, as luck would have it, Manhattan General Hospital decided not to hire him after he arrived and Dr. Ahn landed a position as a Resident Physician for Seaview Hospital (for Tuberculosis) in Staten Island, New York. Dr. Ahn and his family obtained their U.S. citizenship in 1961. Today, Dr. Chai, with forty years of successful research in microbacterial diseases (he is a pulmonaragist), is acknowledged by the National Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia as the world-wide foremost authority in the field of 'atypical tuberculosis.' |
